The Joint Western Arctic Climate Study 2002 involved ships of three nations, Canada, Japan and United States in a concerted multi-disciplinarian climate impact study.
The three primary research platforms were R/V Mirai, CCGS Louis S. St Laurent and CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier. USCGC Healy and Polar Star also contributed. Each vessel according to its capabilities worked in either primarily open water, ice edge or pack ice.
Martech Polar and Captain David Snider provided Ice Pilotage services to R/V Mirai during her operations in the Bering Sea, Chukchi Sea, Beaufort Sea and approaches to Amundsen Gulf.
Martech Polar Consulting, Ltd. is a privately-owned company providing global ice pilotage and navigation services in accordance with IMO Guidelines for Ships Operating in Polar Waters and Canadian Arctic Waters Pollution Prevention Regulations.
While wearing one of my other hats, as Senior Vice President of The Nautical Institute and member of The Institute’s NGO delegation to IMO, I am very much focused on the Polar Code as it progresses through it’s latest re-incarnation.
